The Netherlands Has Its Own “Vertical Forest”! Stefano Boeri Builds First Green Social Housing in Eindhoven
While traveling through Eindhoven, the Netherlands, last year, I stumbled upon a building that truly took me by surprise. Its familiar balconies overflowing with greenery and its staggered planting layout instantly evoked Milan’s iconic Bosco Verticale—as if someone had copied and pasted it right into the Dutch city. It felt like time travel in an instant!
After a bit of research, I discovered that this green building in Eindhoven was indeed designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri—the very same visionary behind Milan’s Vertical Forest. This project is part of Boeri’s ongoing global campaign to replicate the concept in cities around the world following the original’s explosive success in 2014. Known for his signature approach of “planting buildings with trees,” Boeri has realized similar projects in places like Lausanne (Switzerland), Tirana (Albania), and Nanjing (China). And now, the Netherlands joins the list—with its very first green social housing Vertical Forest.
Unlike Milan’s Bosco Verticale, which consists of high-end luxury apartments in the city center—home to celebrities and the wealthy—the Eindhoven project is specifically designed for low- to middle-income residents. It introduces the Vertical Forest concept in the form of social housing, proving that greenery-filled living isn’t only for the rich.
To keep it affordable, the project uses prefabricated modular construction to reduce building and maintenance costs. Compact unit layouts maximize space efficiency and increase the number of apartments. The signature balconies and lush vegetation remain, but the design and development have been smartly streamlined to cut costs.
This strategic shift transforms what was once seen as an exclusive luxury—green architecture—into a practical, accessible, and scalable model for sustainable urban living.
From luxury to social housing, from Milan to Eindhoven, Stefano Boeri is turning the Vertical Forest into a new way of life for cities. One can only imagine where this sustainable model might take root next.
