Visiting the Grafton-Designed Entrance Building of Bocconi University in Milan
Did you know that Bocconi University in Milan is home to a building designed by Grafton Architects, the Irish duo who won the 2020 Pritzker Architecture Prize?
Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, the founders of Grafton Architects, were invited to design this iconic structure back in 2008—well before they received architecture’s highest honor. Clearly, the university demonstrated remarkable foresight in choosing architects who would later gain international acclaim.
This building is conceived as a “filter” between the city and the campus—a transitional zone where public and private, open and enclosed spaces intertwine.
On a sunny afternoon, I had the chance to explore it up close. From a distance, the building appears majestic, with elegant lines and a commanding presence. Up close, one notices the raw, weighty textures of its materials. Perhaps due to time and maintenance, some details have weathered a bit, lending it a rougher edge. Yet overall, the structure still exudes Grafton Architects’ signature poetic spatiality and expressive structural tension: the heavy stone volumes seem to float, shimmering in the shifting light.
